Fathom Design System

A design system aimed to improve efficiency and consistency as we gear up for the next major project.

About the Project

As we neared the completion of our last major project, I saw an opportunity to leverage the slower period and consolidate styles and patterns into a design system. My goal was to boost the team's efficiency and enhance consistency as we transitioned to the next major project.

Project Details

At Fathom, we had an existing design system, but its potential was never fully realised. Despite the great work that went into it, both the design and front-end teams were underutilising it. Recognising the value of an effective design system, and having dedicated significant effort to establishing rules and patterns in our last project, I felt compelled to formalise them into a revised and robust design system. Furthermore, with the front-end team preparing for a platform rewrite, this presented the perfect opportunity for collaboration and establishing a shared language, making it an ideal time to undertake this project.

Things I Did

• In depth discovery of what success looks like through a "hopes and fears" workshop and ongoing close collaboration with designers and developers.

• Collaborated with the design team to create a brand identity we could rally around. This included a name and logo, and look and feel for the design system.

• Established a governance model that fit our resource constraints, encouraged ownership, and facilitated asynchronous communication.

• Conducted weekly catch-ups with the design and front-end teams to maintain synchronisation between Figma and front-end versions.

• Developed robust, scalable and maintainable components based on in-depth product audits.

• Designed a user-friendly Figma prototype and reference website to democratise resources and improve transparency.

• Provided learning opportunities and resources to upskill fellow designers.
